What is Swallowing Therapy?

Difficulty swallowing, also know as Dysphagia, focuses on improving the safety, efficiency, and comfort of swallowing through targeted exercises, airway‑protection training, and individualized compensatory strategies.

Treatment supports safe nutrition, reduces aspiration risk, and helps adults participate confidently in mealtimes across home and community settings.

Typical signs of Dysphagia in adults:

  1. Coughing, choking, or throat clearing during or after meals.
  2. Food, liquids, or medication may seem to “get stuck” in your throat.
  3. Avoiding previously enjoyed foods due to their challenging texture.
  4. Taking much longer to finish meals or needing extra effort to swallow.
  5. Changes in vocal quality during or after eating or drinking.
  6. Swallowing changes after medical conditions (e.g. Parkinson’s disease or a stroke).
